Why I stopped using stock photography

It makes everything look like everything else. A few notes on what I use instead.

Grey wall with long diagonal lines

Stock photography answers a question nobody asked: what would a generic version of this look like? The answer is always the same smiling people at the same white desk.

What I do instead

  • Photograph the real thing, badly, rather than a fake thing, perfectly.
  • Use flat colour and type where a photo was only decoration.
  • Commission one honest portrait and use it everywhere.

This site currently uses stand-in photographs, and I will replace every one of them.
